As part of Arbor Month, Capricorn District Municipality, in partnership with Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality, planted 30 indigenous trees at Madisha Ditoro Community Hall in Ga-Madisha Ditoro Village, Zebediela, on 11 September 2026.
The initiative forms part of efforts to support the Presidential Million Tree Call, which encourages South Africans to contribute to the national drive to plant millions of trees, including the Presidential commitment to plant 10 million trees during 2026. The campaign highlights tree planting as a practical way for communities, institutions and individuals to contribute to environmental protection and climate action.
Arbor Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the vital role trees play in our lives. Trees help improve air quality, absorb carbon dioxide, provide shade, protect soil, support biodiversity, conserve ecosystems and create greener public spaces. Indigenous trees are particularly important because they are adapted to local conditions and provide habitat and food for local wildlife.
The tree-planting initiative also supports Capricorn District Municipality’s Climate Change Adaptation Strategy, particularly interventions focused on carbon sequestration and strengthening the resilience of communities against the impacts of climate change. It further promotes awareness about the importance of managing alien invasive species and replacing them, where appropriate, with indigenous trees that support local ecosystems.
This year’s Arbor Month theme, “My Tree, My Oxygen – Plant Yours Today,” calls on everyone to take meaningful action by planting, protecting and caring for trees. One tree can make a difference. A community planting together can create a lasting legacy.
Let us answer the call: Plant a tree, nurture it and help grow a greener, healthier and more climate-resilient future.
