“You need decide now, what kind of a worker you want to be in future. The subjects you have taken at school, should be the subjects that will assist you to achieve your futrure goals. We are a caring municipality hence we have selected you from more than a million learners in our district. Take this programme as a learning curve and don’t be scared to ask questions on how municipalities operates” said Cllr MC Masoga, MMC for Planning addressing learners on 26 May 2023 at CDM Council Chamber.CDM hosted 50 learners from different schools within the district for the “Take a Girl/Boy Child to Work Programme”. This was coordinated together with the Department of Education led by the District Manager, Mr Mothemane. It is part of embracing the annual Take a Girl/Boy Child to Work Campaign. Learners were given the opportunity to learn and be motivated on issues of career choice and workplace environment within the municipality, and to make them understand the functions and responsibilities of Local Government.
This project is inspired by the initiative which was started by cellphone network company, CellC many years ago when it introduced a national campaign to give learners an opportunity to explore workplace environment that would assist them in making correct career choices.
Capricorn District Municipality has over the past years been successfully hosting such an initiative aimed at empowering school learners. The campaign also encourages these young women and men to remember that they can inspire, influence and lead others to greatness in the society and equally be groomed to be responsible citizens.
The campaign targeted Grade 08 to Grade 12 girl and boy learners including learners with special educational needs. The learners were placed within all the six departments within Capricorn District Municipality and some went to High Court to attend a court case. This was done to empower the learners with information on the functions of the municipality and career opportunities.
