Capricorn District Municipality Sport Coordinator Alpheus “Jomo” Mashamaite has been elected unopposed as the new president of the Inter-Municipal Sports of South Africa (IMSSA). The elections were held during the annual Southern Africa Inter-Municipal Sports Association (SAIMSA) games 2014 that took place late September at Buffalo City Metro in East London at the Eastern Cape Province.
IMSSA is an organization focused on municipal employee sports as part of employee wellness programmes. The organization was established in 2011 and is an affiliate member of the SAIMSA, the only structure which looks at the development of municipal employee sport within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
Mashamaite is elected to lead the structure after having been led by an interim structure since 2011. The structure will serve as a mouth piece for South African municipalities participating in the SAIMSA games and also municipal employees passionate about sport within their respective institutions. “Although the issue of employee wellness is pivotal in a workplace, it is our objective to equally share the values with employers. Our main objective is to unify employees through sport within the municipalities and encourage active participation in sport. We envisage making IMSSA visible in all Provinces across the Republic of South Africa” said Mashamaite. These will ensure employers continue to pledge support and maintain sustainability of this important initiative. Employee wellness can never be under estimated in a workplace given its impact on our employees’ ability to continuously provide services to our communities. Our organization has both the interest of sport devotees and employer at heart,” emphasized said Mashamaite.
Mashamaite added IMSSA also intend to advocate the values and practices that promote diverse nature of our society accommodating various sporting codes existing within our member municipalities and recognizing those considered to be in minority. The South African Municipalities started participating in the SAIMSA games since its inception in 2003.The games are seen as part of the wellness programme as well as the networking session amongst employees from different municipalities within the republic and the SADC region.
Other elected IMSSA committee members are Deputy President- Dodo Koketso Lekoma from Mahikeng Municipality in North West, Secretary Mihloti Shirinda from Greater Tzaneen in Limpopo, Deputy Secretary Girly Maifala from Polokwane Municipality in Limpopo, Treasurer Deon Martin from Buffalo City Metro in Eastern Cape, Additional members from Limpopo are Staff Tsebe of Mogalakwena Local, Bethuel Mabeso from Blouberg Local, Tintswalo Shiringani from Makhado, Sam Rameetse and Comfort Mathebula from Greater Tzaneen. From Eastern Cape are Mpho Mhlomi from O.R. Tambo District, Victor Letuka and Pendy Nyula from King Sabata Dalinjebo. From North West are Semphete Mosweusweu and Dibaba Tsirwe from Mahikeng Local. From Kwazulu Natal is Bongani Hlope from Ethekhwini Metro and Thaba Mogano from City of Joburg.
Although in terms of municipal appointment Mashamaite is a Disaster Management Officer, he has vast knowledge serving in various sport committee and has a Certificate in Sport Administration from University of Johannesburg. He is currently serving as Treasurer for Polokwane Local Football Association an affiliate of South African Football Association (SAFA) ‘s Capricorn Region structure, a position he has been holding since 2010 and Capricorn District Municipality Employee Sport Committee as Sport Coordinator.
He has also served in the following structures, City of Joburg Hostels League Football Association as league secretary, City of Joburg Employee Sport as Chairperson, City of Joburg Emergency Management Services Sport Committee as Chairperson, Capricorn District Municipality Employee Sport Committee as Chairperson and Sport Coordinator and he is the founder and owner of Mothula Vultures Football Club based at Sengatane village an affiliate of Polokwane Local Football Association. His extensive knowledge of sport both at workplace and in the community is ideal to make IMSSA a credible structure that will take employee sport to the next level.
