It was a day filled with fun for the Capricorn Elders as they were doing aerobics during the celebration of the District Elderly Abuse Awareness campaign. Capricorn District Municipality hosted the district elderly abuse awareness campaign on 27 June 2019 at Polokwane Cricket Club.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is commemorated each year on 15 June to highlight elder abuse.
Elder abuse is any act that cause harm to an older person and is carried out by someone they know. The abuse may be physical, social, financial, psychological, sexual, illtreatment and neglect. The municipality was hosting the campaign to create an awareness of elderly abuse in homes and in communities, to encourage the young to respect the elderly and encourage active ageing.
Speaking during the event, Cllr. Lizbeth Mothata said ” As CDM we know ageing comes with barriers and we are pleased that you chose to defy these barriers of old age by coming here to mingle as older people and also exercise.
Cllr. Mothata also said that there are people who trick older persons to buy expensive funeral covers, give them loans at unreasonable interests rates and thereby escalating their hardships. “There are those who are abusing them physically and emotionally. We need to find ways to live off their wisdom and gain from their knowlegde of intricacies of life”, said Mothata. The elders appreciated the campaign and applead to the municipality to have these kind of actvities for the older persons from time and again.
