Capricorn District Municipality dominated the Gender Links 2019 SADC PROTOCOL@WORK Summits and Awards South Africa, scooping 11 Awards in eight categories during the award ceremony held on 28 June 2019 at Kopanong Hotel and Conference Center in Benoni Gauteng.
The two days summit held from 27-28 Jne 2019 took place under the theme ‘Local Action for a strong 2030 A-gender in Southern Africa’. The summit started with registration and followed by presentations from participants. Day two kick started with presentation from Gender Links on the new funding for the Women’s Voice and Leadership South Africa project which was launched in May 2019. The R44 million WVL South Africa grant was funded by the Global Affairs Canada.
The judges giving an overview of the summit and presentations by participants during the award ceremony said, “We must appreciate the work that each and everyone of you in order to make a difference in your own space. This has been one of the most difficult job to do as all participants have demonstrated to the extreme the impact of their projects in the community. All of you are winners”.
The District Municipality started participating in the Centres of Excellence (COE) programme for Gender Mainstreaming in 2010. The South African Development Community (SADC) Gender and Development Protocol signed in August 2008 set a target for governments to halve current levels of gender based violence by 2015.
The Council of Capricorn District realized the importance of the SADC Gender Protocol Instrument and has since implemented the ten stages of the COE process and declared the District Gender Summit an annual project in 2015. Every year the District participants are always encouraged to participate at the Annual Gender Justice and Local Government Summit that is hosted by Gender Links.
For 2019, CDM managed to send 35 participants to take part at Kopanong Conference Centre on the 27 – 28 June 2019 under the theme #VoiceandChoice SADC Gender Protocol@Work Awards. The summit was meant for sharing and showcasing best practices by entrants in different categories, the Drivers of Change, Local Government and the Best Practices. During the summit participants shared their best practices and showcased various projects done by participants using the alignment of the SADC Gender and Development Protocol and Sustainable Development Goals. The summit integrated analysis of the institutional profiles, Emerging entrepreneurs, government, drivers of change (leadership profiles), Media and Sexual Reproductive Health Rights.
The objectives of the summit was to bring together all key stakeholders to share strategies and good practices for achieving the 28 targets of the SADC Gender Protocol in the count down to 2015, build linkages at local government work on the ground as part of the broader objective of gender responsive governance and accountability, and developing a critical citizenry around the SADC Gender Protocol and the MDGs, develop strategic partnerships and networking opportunities, strengthen the gender movement from local to national to regional to international level and improve the quality of work through increased competition and collaboration.
There were 75 participants from South Africa as whole under the 8 different categories. There were 8 winners and 9 runner ups. Each category had a winner, and runner-ups. Capricorn District Municipality managed to bring 11 Awards home.
