“I am happy about what the municipality has done. This shows that they take us serious. They don’t just use us during our term of office and it ends there. The certificates will help us going forward.” These are the words of Florah Padima from ward 2 in Eisleben Molemole Municipality.

Padima was one of the seventy former Ward Committee members who were recipients of a Certificate of Competence, awarded by Capricorn District Municipality (CDM) on 08 April 2022 at Polokwane Council Chamber in Polokwane.

Section 73 (5) (d) of the Local Government Municipal Structures Act of 1998, gives municipal councils the mandate to capacitate ward comnittees to be able to perform their functions, exercise their powers and undertake development in their wards.

CDM hosted an event to award certificates of competence to the seventy former ward committee members, who served during the previous term of office in their councils (2016-2021). The training was conducted by CDM in June and August 2021.

Speaking during the event CDM’s Speaker Cllr. Maseka Pheedi commended the recipients of certificates and said that this will not only assist them at the work place but in other aspects of their lives.

The event was attended by Council Speakers, Council Support Managers and the former ward committee members from local municipalities namely Blouberg, Molemole, Lepelle-Nkumpi and Polokwane .
