The district is partnering with the Department of Education hosted the winter school camp farewell programme on 28 June 2015. The programme is targeting at schools with high enrolment in the district. Principals of schools have assisted in the selection of learners in their schools. The district is funding the entire winter school camp and is encouraging the increase in the number of learners taking Mathematics and Physical Science in Grade 12.
This is in partnership with Department of Education, whose role was to identify two schools per local municipality with high enrolment. Today CDM met with 100 learners who have been chosen from the entire district to send them to the Winter School Camp starting this coming week.
The institution that will be rendering education training in the area of science and maths is Waterberg Educational Project for Commerce and Science (WEPCOS). The venue for winter school is at Roodepoort road, Tondoni Lodge not far from Polokwane. Learners will be in the winter school for a period of two weeks.
“Improving learner attainment is our priority of priorities. We will not rest until our children can operate and achieve at the same levels with their peers in the country. Our inputs and processes in this year going forward are aimed at realizing that Mathematics and Science remain the cornerstone of skills development in our Province and of course our district” MMC Kgare who was the acting executive mayor said during the sending away of 100 learners from 10 schools in the district.
In the previous year the district only absorbed 24 learners and promised that this year the number will increase. “We have informed the public in the previous year that we will be increasing the number, today we are presenting our promise of 100 leaners” Kgare said.
She added by saying that the camp the learners are going to is one of the strategic change of teaching that CDM and the department have developed in assisting learners. “Use this opportunity very effectively to improve your knowledge in education. We are not sending you there to bring back negative results, to fall into wrong doings, to access nyaope and other substances and alcohol. We are sending you there to learn” she reiterated.
