RE: Cllr Motalane Monakedi resigns as Executive Mayor

AFTER serving as the Executive Mayor for ten years, Cllr Motalane Monakedi has on Friday tendered his resignation to council at a special council meeting. The resignation was in fulfillment of section 48 of the Municipal Structures Act 117 of 1998, as amended and has, in terms of the Act given effect to the election of the new Executive Mayor who was appointed from amongst the members of the mayoral committee, as the MEC for local government (and housing) approves.

Monakedi was the first Executive Mayor of Capricorn District Municipality when the municipality came into being in December 2000 after the first local government elections and was re-elected to serve the second term in March 2006.

Driven by passion to serve the people, Monakedi led the district municipality from the shaky beginning from the remnants of the then Northern District Council to what is now venerated as a true ‘Home of Excellence and Opportunities for a better life’. He championed solid partnerships with many stakeholders in the interest of accelerated service delivery and development.

Under his stewardship, CDM paddled through challenges to fight off service delivery backlogs in order to change the people’s daily encounter with poverty for the better. During his term of office, he fired on all cylinders to improve access to basic services and to date, 85% of the district population has got access to water, 75% has got access to electricity while 51% has got access to basic sanitation.

This service delivery record speaks volumes about his dedication, toil and hard work to realize the core aspirations of the people, especially the poor. He now departs the council at a time when the municipality marvels at 10 years of service delivery. He laid a solid foundation for the district municipality to grow in leaps and bounds; and attain all Millennium Development Goals.

“I sincerely thank the ANC for having given me an opportunity to serve the people of Capricorn district; and for their ever-present support and guidance. I also thank all councilors, the municipal manager, the staff, all traditional leaders and all other stakeholders for their optimism and commitment,” said Monakedi.

Monakedi will join Trade and Investment Limpopo (TIL) as the Chief Executive Officer. The Municipality has bid him farewell on Friday 06 August 2010, during farewell gala dinner held at Meropa Casino and Entertainment World.
